TEAM OF PROFESSIONALS
Collaborative divorce is a supportive process. Our goal is to help couples transition from the uncertainty of their present divorce scenario to the certainty of a more hopeful future. We achieve successful outcomes with an interdisciplinary team of experienced and committed professionals, all working together for you. The team consists of your collaborative attorney, a mental health neutral and a financial neutral. Together the team works to establish your goals for the future and negotiate what’s important to you based on these goals.
The collaborative attorney’s role is to advocate for and protect your best interests. They work as an integrated component of your interdisciplinary team to ensure that you understand the legal ramifications of all negotiated decisions, as well as to clarify the impact of such decisions on your short- and long-term future.
The Mental Health Neutral
Collaborative cases, especially those involving children, often involve deep-seated emotions of grief or anger. The number one variable linked to the future mental health and emotional well-being of children is how parents behave and work together during and after a divorce. The mental health neutral helps couples stay future oriented, instead of expending energy reiterating grievances from the past.
The mental health neutral works to enrich the communication skills that divorcing couples need for positive decision-making and the creation of healthy co-parenting teams. The mental health neutral, along with your attorney, helps explore and negotiate issues of custody and co-parenting by developing with you a Parenting Plan that addresses time and responsibility for your children. The mental health neutral has the benefit of calling upon decades of experience with children, parenting and post-divorce restructured (and sometimes blended) families. Working with a mental health neutral can save you both time and money in attorney fees.
The Financial Neutral
The financial neutral plays a crucial role on the interdisciplinary team and also adds a cost-effective element. The financial neutral gathers financial data and documents, identifies assets and liabilities, helps prepare the past marital lifestyle budget, the future individual lifestyle budgets and identifies income available to both spouses. The financial neutral also identifies unique or complex features in the couples’ financial portfolio.
Using the financial neutral helps to create safety, assuring the couples’ financial questions are answered and providing support for full financial disclosure, developing lifestyle budgets and addressing issues like tax consequences and asset valuations.
The interdisciplinary team addresses the emotional, legal and financial aspects of your divorce. They insist on respectful, interest-based negotiations that keep the focus on the interests of the children. Our professionals bring their respective areas of expertise and insights to the team for one purpose – supporting the family.
Both the mental health neutral and financial neutral are crucial members of the team. They typically charge an hourly rate approximately one-half the hourly rate of the attorneys. The interdisciplinary team works together to assess the couple for success in the collaborative process and to support the couple throughout all aspects of the journey.
